On the problems of masonry and concrete composite structure

Post by wangfei » Sat Jul 16, 2022 2:38 pm

My model includes concrete frame-shear wall and masonry structure. For masonry structure, I use micro and macro modeling methods respectively, but there are some problems:The macro model can not run. The micro model can run,but the calculation results show that there is no horizontal displacement. Hope that experts can point out my problems. In addition, the uncertain problem is how to deal with the constraint relationship between constructional column and masonry wall more reasonably?

Dear Wanfei,
could you send us some additional information about your problem? It would be useful to have some drawings with a brief description of the problem your trying to analyze.

Thank you very much for your reply. My model includes masonry and concrete structures. In particular, I am not sure how to deal with the constraint relationship between constructional columns and masonry walls.
In addition, I use the macro modeling method for masonry walls. I have established two models respectively, one of which I merge all together, and the other model I have established the relationship between structural columns and walls, but these two models have certain problems and cannot calculate the results. After the calculation, there is no horizontal displacement and reaction. I still can't find the reason.
Thanks for your help, look forward your reply.

In both models, you have issues with the boundary conditions.
In the first model (non-merged) you attach the frame and walls with equalDOFs, so it is equivalent to the merged approach.
Typically you model frame and walls separately when you want to model their interaction with contact elements.

Moving to the merged model:
I don't understand what you want to achieve with the 2 EqualDOFs. They are not going to work together. Only 1 of them will be considered.

So please, send a sketch with a clear explanation of what are the boundary conditions you want to represent. We will suggest you how to do them

I really appreciate your help. I revised my model again, but the calculation results still show that there is no displacement, even the effect of vertical load. The introduction of the model is in the uploaded document.
Now,The main problem is that I can't apply load to the model. I can't find the reason. So ask for your help.
Thank you again for your help

As I said before you cannot apply the vertical load and the vertical fixity on top at the same time. The steps are:
add vertical load
do vertical analysis
fix vertical displacement at current position
apply push load
pushover
