However, I think I may have made a mistake somewhere with the interactions or the zero-length elements because it is difficult to tell what has been selected with the nodes overlapping at the zero length elements, so I would greatly appreciate any help and guidance you can provide

When you define interactions in coincident geometries, it's easier if you first move them apart, create the interaction, and finally move them to their original position
