Dividing geometries

Post by kolozvari » Wed Jan 12, 2022 2:04 am

Hello,

I am working on adding a building on top of the soil domain. I have entered nodes of the building, but I cannot "merge" it with the soil because the geometries dont have common points (Im assuming this is the reason). See picture below - I need to divide soil along the red lines. How do I divide geometry so the soil and the building have common points so I can merge them all into one? Is there a command in STKO that can help me to do this quickly without redefining all soul layers?

Please let me know. Thank you.

You can use also the embed option. The two mesh can be also different in this case, we often use this possibility in SSI.
You need to embed the foundation to the soil.

Thank you both. I am sorry, but your response is not very clear. What does the embed option do? Are you saying that there is no need to merge the geometries? Is it possible to do what I want per figure I originally attached? Can you please provide more details?

Thank you.

If you want to "explore" the "embed" option, i.e. attaching to un-compatible geometries, you can see how we did it in the last webinar with the soil-foundation-structure interaction. In that webinar the soil under the building and the surrounding soil were not merged, but attached using the ASDEmbeddedNode constraint.

Otherwise, if you want to "merge" two compatible geometries, you need to perform "cuts" as per your image.
All you need to do is to create a series of faces in the X-Z and Y-Z planes, for each cut line you've drawn.
Then you can merge the soil geometry with those faces with the "Merge" command.
After that operation, you will see that the property assignments at each layer are maintained.

Thank you. I will take a look at the webinar. Just to make sure I understand correctly, both options will lead to the same results, correct?

Thanks

More or less. The merge option will force you to have the same mesh size, while with the embed option you can also use different meshes (very useful in SSI). The only thing you can't capture is rocking, if you like to capture rocking you need to use the 3D contact interaction we developed.

Attached a simple model as example:
1) Embed interaction
2) 3D damage model in IMPLEX so you can see how it works with a nonlinear model
3) It is in MP
4) I also added the monitor, it is a very useful feature that a lot of users don't know

From my experience rocking is not an issue in the type of structures I am analyzing, but the example is definitely useful.

Thank you very much.

I believe I created transition correctly. However, I have a new problem now.

Since I am trying to add a simple "stick" SDOF structure on top of my soil/foundation domain, I get the error that "Different NDOF at same node (node = 1, NDF1=3, DNF2 = 6)". I believe this is because soil solid elements have only 3 DOFs per nodes and beam elements used for the stick structure have 6 DOFs per node. Since there is a node that belongs to both types of elements, this error occurs.

How do I fix this? I think I need to create multiple domains and then merge them somehow, but I dont know how to do this in STKO. Maybe there is another way to go around this.

Please advise. Thanks

You can use the beam to solid interaction. It is an interaction created to solve the problem to connect elements with different dof
